West Bengal registered 105 deaths due to deadly novel coronavirus and not 33 as the state’s press statement claims, new data has revealed.

Contrary to the rest of the nation, West Bengal government is terming a person Covid-19 casualty only if he or she did not have any other disease at the time of the death.

Cases with comorbidities like hypertension, diabetes or cardiovascular problems are not being categorised as the Covid-10 deaths.

As per the new data, released on Thursday, the state registered 33 ‘Covid-19 deaths’ and 72 other deaths where patients were suffering from Covid-19 but died of comorbidities.

As per the Union Health Ministry data, 1075 people in India have died due to novel coronavirus, out of which at least 78 per cent suffered from comorbidities.

As per the West Bengal government, the state on Thursday added 11 deaths to the Covid-19 toll, taking it to 33.

In the last 24 hours, Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha said, 37 fresh coronavirus cases have been reported in the state, and 15 people were discharged from hospitals following their recovery.

Currently, West Bengal has 572 active cases. At least 139 people have recovered, he said.

Since Wednesday, 1,905 samples have been tested for the virus. The total number of samples examined so far stands at 16,525, the senior officer said.

According to the state health department, West Bengal has reported a total of 744 Covid-19 cases. The Union health ministry, however, stated that the total was 758.
