PUNE: Former international rifle shooter and coach from Maharashtra, Pournima Zanane, passed away in Pune on Saturday.
Pournima was 42 and had been suffering from cancer for the past two years.
She had represented India at World Cups, Asian Championships and was a national record holder in 10m air rifle event. She was also bestowed with the prestigious Shiv Chhatrapati Sports award by the government of Maharashtra.
Born in Nanded, Pournima started her career in Mumbai as a shooter and later shifted to Pune. Pournima was diagnosed with cancer during the Nationals in Kerala two years ago.
Her senior in the Indian team and current national coach Deepali Deshpande remembers Pournima as a fighter.
“She was way more mature than all her contemporaries and was one of the most intelligent shooters I have seen. She had her share of struggles throughout her life but she was a fighter. She knew her strengths and weaknesses well. Her demise is a big loss for everybody around her. I knew about her health but it is still difficult to come to terms with the news of her passing away,” Deepali said.
Pournima had won medals at SAF Games, Commonwealth Championships and Asian Championships at a time when she had tough competition within the team from Deepali, Anjali Bhagwat and Suma Shirur.
After retiring in 2012, she decided to take up coaching and started with assisting six-time world champion Austrian shooter Farnik Thomas in 2014.
“She was a wonderful coach and had shaped teams like Sri Lanka and South Africa. She was an ISSF License ‘B’ coach and was due to get License ‘A’ soon. Pournima was gritty and it was evident when she fought cancer despite getting to know about it at the fourth stage. It was the relapse she was fighting since past few months,” Pournima’s senior and National Rifle Association of India joint secretary, Pawan Singh, said.
