The political stalemate in Madhya Pradesh continues to dominate headline with Chief Minister Kamal Nath and his government struggling to stay afloat. With Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan claiming that chief minister Kamal Nath does not have the numbers to prove his majority, the air is rife with speculation on who will be sitting on the chief minister’s chair by the end of this week.

On Sunday, Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon wrote a letter to CM Kamal Nath. In the letter, the Governor asked Kamal Nath to prove his majority by Monday “or else it will be considered that your government does not have a majority”.

Congress leader and MP CM Kamal Nath maintained that he has still has the support of a majority of MLAs in the 230-member state Assembly.

Ruckus in Madhya Pradesh Assembly

The Madhya Pradesh Assembly re-convened on Monday after the Holi vacations. Governor Lalji Tandon walked to the centre of the Assembly along with Speaker NP Prajapati and issued a statement before Prajapati apprised the members of the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and cited it as a reason to adjourn the Assembly.

This led to MLAs in the opposition benches shouting slogans, demanding an immediate floor test. However, their demands were not met. Later in the day, BJP leader and former MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited the Raj Bhavan in Bhopal along with legislators of his party and urged the Governor to reconvene the Assembly and order CM Kamal Nath to prove his majority with a floor test.

Later in the day, Chief Minister Kamal Nath met Governor Lalji Tandon at the latter’s residence. After stepping out of the Raj Bhavan, Kamal Nath told media persons that his government continues to enjoy a majority in the state Assembly. The Madhya Pradesh CM even dared the opposition party in the state (BJP) to table a no-confidence motion against his government.

SC to decide on floor test

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court is slated to hear a plea filed by Shivraj Singh Chouhan in this regard. In his plea, Chouhan has sought directions to the Kamal Nath government to undertake a floor test in the state Assembly as directed by Governor Lalji Tandon. The plea directs the Speaker, CM and principal secretary of the Assembly to hold a floor test “within 12 hours of the passing of the order by this court and as per directions issued by the Governor”.
