Cricket fans, legends of the game and whole of India was waiting for this time of the year as MS Dhoni would have returned to professional cricket in CSK colours by now. The gravity of his return to cricket after an almost 9-month hiatus was more as Dhoni was expected to stake his clam in the T20 World Cup squad throgh his performance in the IPL.
If that was the way MS Dhoni had planned his grand comeback then it can be said that his plans have gone haywire because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Former chief selector MSK Prasad was also the one waiting for the return MS Dhoni. The reasons were two, Prasad like others wanted to see a glimpse of Dhoni doing what he does best on the field and also he thought that with KL Rahul keeping the wickets now, the veteran will find himself in a tricky situation.
“Now, that KL also has done extremely well in limited-overs that he played in NZ, so, it would’ve been nice had this IPL held and we would’ve seen Mahi’s old glimpses back but now it’s a tricky situation,” Prasad said.
MSK Prasad, who was recently succeeded by Sunil Joshi, asserted that MS Dhoni himself didn’t want to play after the 2019 World Cup semifinal match, in which India suffered a heartbreaking loss.
“I am very very clear. I made it very very clear. We had a discussion and mahi didn’t want to play for sometime, so we moved on and then picked up Rishabh Pant and we’ve been backing him,” the 45-year-old revealed in an interview with Fancode.
MSK Prasad heaped praises on KL Rahul, the wicketkeeper-batsman. He said wicketkeeping was not something new for Rahul and he has seen him fulfilling the role in Ranji Trophy and Vijaya Hazare matches.
Prasad added that KL Rahul’s skills behind the wicket is applause-worthy and may be he was thinking somewhere of taking this role and working hard on it.
“Whatever chances he had as wicketkeeper batsman, he executed it to perfection and definitely he will be our top contender for our slot,” MSK Prasad concluded.
Notably, KL Rahul has recently said that replacing MS Dhoni behind the wickets was a very tough job as it also involves people accepting someone else other than Dhoni behind the wickets.
“If you fumble a ball, people feel that you cannot replace MS Dhoni. The pressure of replacing a legendary wicket-keeper like MSD was immense as it involved people accepting someone else behind the stumps,” Rahul had said.
